                                                         The Spanish Pavilion in Paris

The World's Fair or Exhibition of 1937 took place in Paris. It was controversial insofar as it included the architecture and art of the totalitarian governments and authoritarian regimes that menaced Europe at the time. The Soviet Union and Nazi German Pavilions were particularly intimidating displays of their power and hostility toward each other and the world. Less formidable was the modest Spanish Pavilion which featured Picasso's Guernica, an anti-fascist response to Franco's Nationalist Army and its treatment of the Republic of Spain.
